VICTORIA CHICK: Artist Biography
Invitational & Juried Exhibitions Solo & Group Exhibitions
Silver City, New Mexico artist Victoria Chick was born in Minnesota and spent her early childhood in a rural environment in the Ramsey County village of Little Canada. Since few children lived nearby, she learned to entertain herself by exploring the farms, woods, and lakes in the area. Drawing was a tool to study and understand nature.
About age 13, her family moved to Liberty, Missouri. The nearby cultural opportunities at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art exposed her to new ways of seeing and she was fortunate to live within a school district that had an excellent high school art program.
She attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas where John Bashor, Chairman of the Art Department, introduced her to drawing from the model and, in particular, gesture drawing, beginning a life – long interest in expressing movement. The paintings at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery, also located in Lindsborg, were an eye opening experience in color. Chick received her B.A. in Art from the University of Missouri at Kansas City where muralist Eric Bransby was her most influential studio professor. Her interest in Art History also developed at this time. She was awarded an M.F.A. in Painting from Kent State University in Ohio.
Other influential experiences include work as a registered Art Therapist (ATR) and teaching studio and art history courses at the college and university levels.
She is currently a full time painter and printmaker.
